Device information

Device information can be used to display device specific information for either side of the DD500E. Information is available using two separate commands:

info, see Info
diagnostics, see Diagnostics

Info

To display device information, as seen in the figure below, perform the following steps:

Connect both configuration cables to the Configuration laptop and power on the DD500E.
Start a Command prompt window.
Press the Multi-function button on the front panel of the DD500E to enter Configuration mode. Release the button after ~2 seconds.
Run the command dd500e_config info COMX COMY in the Command prompt windows, where:
- COMX COMY are replaced with the COM ports found in Checking COM ports.
- COMX COMY must be entered with a space.
The following information is displayed for each side of the DD500E:
- Side - Upstream or Downstream.
- MAC address - address of the network interface on the connected side of the device.
- Firmware version - version currently running on the connected side of the device.
- Configuration - summary of the current configuration running on the device.

Diagnostics

To run device diagnostics, perform the following steps:

Press the Multi-function button on the front panel of the DD500E to enter Configuration mode. Release the button after ~2 seconds.
Run the command dd500e_config diagnostics COMX COMY in the Command prompt windows, where:
- COMX COMY are replaced with the COM ports found in Checking COM ports.
- COMX COMY must be entered with a space.
The following information is displayed for each side of the DD500E:
- Side - Upstream or Downstream.
  - Number of automatic system resets - how many resets that have been caused by the internal watchdog since last power cycle.
  - Number of manual system resets - how many resets that have been executed by the Multi-function button being pressed since last power cycle.
  - Last network packets on Upstream (since last power cycle)
    
    Last network packet received from network - timestamp indicating when data was last received from the upstream network.
    
    Last network packet sent to downstream - timestamp indicating when data was last sent to the downstream side of the device.
  - Last network packets on Downstream (since last power cycle)
    
    Last network packet received from upstream - timestamp indicating when data was last received from the upstream side of the device.
    
    Last network packet sent to network - timestamp indicating when data was last sent to the downstream network.

Logging

Log messages can be managed in two ways, depending on severity:

Monitoring operational log messages (see Monitoring operational log messages)
Viewing and transferring error logs (see Error logs)

Monitoring operational log messages

The DD500E generates operational log messages whenever needed. These messages are normally informational and do not require additional actions. If required, they can be monitored.

To start monitoring operational log messages, perform the following steps:

Power on the DD500E (see Power) and make sure the Power and status indicator is constantly lit blue.
Connect the device to the Configuration laptop, using the two included USB-serial cables (see Connecting cables for configuration).
Start two separate Command prompt windows on the Configuration laptop and change directory to where the dd500e_config.exe file is located.
Run the command dd500_config read COMX in either of the Command prompt windows, where:
- COMX is replaced with the COM port found in Checking COM ports
Run the command in step 4 again, replacing COMX with COMY, to display information from the other side of the device.
Both Command prompt windows will show Reading from COMX/COMY, waiting for data to display.
Reset the device using the Multi-function button, leaving the Command prompt windows as they are. When the device is restarted, a complete log of the boot process will be displayed in each of the Command prompt windows. Differences between Upstream and Downstream can be noticed.
Whenever new log messages are generated, they will be displayed in respective Command prompt window.
Log messages can be monitored until Ctrl+C is pressed in the Command prompt window or the Command prompt window is closed. Note that network traffic sent over the DD500E cannot be accessed in any way.

Error logs

The DD500E generates error logs whenever needed. These logs are indications of problems that require additional actions. Error logs can be viewed on screen or transferred to a file.

Viewing error logs

To view device error logs, perform the following steps:

Start a Command prompt window.
Press the Multi-function button on the front panel of the DD500E to enter Configuration mode. Release the button after ~2 seconds.
Run the command dd500e_config error-logs COMX COMY in the Command prompt windows, where:
- COMX COMY are replaced with the COM ports found in Checking COM ports.
- COMX COMY must be entered with a space.
The following information is displayed for each side of the DD500E:
- Side - Upstream or Downstream.
  - List of error messages (if any) - up to 10 messages related to device errors are listed. Time since boot-up in seconds is also displayed for each error message.
In the displayed information, up to 10 error messages are listed. If no error messages are listed, no messages have been generated.
Use the information in listed error messages to correct any existing problems.

Transferring error logs

To transfer error logs to file, perform the following steps:

Run the error-logs command according to Error logs, changing the command to dd500e_config error-logs COMX --file [file_name.txt].
Any existing error logs are transferred to a file that can be viewed using a text editor, such as Windows Notepad. Note that network traffic sent over the DD500E cannot be accessed in any way.
The command is completed when Successfully wrote device info to [file_name.txt] is displayed.
Repeat the command for COMY, using a new file name.

If both sides of the DD500E are connected, the command dd500e_config error-logs COMX COMY --file [file_name.txt] will write information from both sides to the same file.
In the transferred information, up to 10 error messages are listed. If no error messages are listed, no messages have been generated.
Use the information in listed error messages to correct any existing problems.

Deleting error logs

To delete error logs from the device, perform the following steps:

Run the error-logs command according to Error logs, changing the command to dd500e_config error-logs COMX --delete-logs.
Any existing error logs are deleted. The command is completed when the error log summary is displayed, showing no logs.
Repeat the command for COMY.
note
If both sides of the DD500E are connected, the command dd500e_config error-logs COMX COMY --delete-logs will delete any existing error logs on both sides.

Firmware upgrade

The Firmware upgrade function is used to upload new firmware to the DD500E in order to correct discovered bugs, update security and to potentially add new features.

New firmware updates are made available on the Advenica Artifactory file share and all registered users are notified. See Downloads for details.

Both Upstream and Downstream sides of the DD500E must be upgraded at the same time.

To upgrade firmware on the DD500E, perform the following steps:

Start a Command prompt window.
Press the Multi-function button on the front panel of the DD500E to enter Configuration mode. Release the button after ~2 seconds.
Run the command dd500e_config firmware-upgrade [firmware_upgrade_file_name] COMX COMY in the Command prompt window, where:
- [firmware_upgrade_file_name] is replaced with the name of the file downloaded from Advenica Artifactory.
- COMX COMY are replaced with the COM ports found in Checking COM ports.
- COMX COMY must be entered with a space.
The new firmware will be uploaded and applied on both sides of the DD500E. While the firmware upgrade is ongoing, progress is displayed in the Command prompt window. When firmware upgrade is completed, Firmware upgrade done is displayed and the device restarts.
Confirm the new firmware using the info command, see Info.

Factory reset

The Factory reset function will erase all user provided settings, such as network parameters and logs, and leave the DD500E without a valid configuration.

The function is useful for instance when an installation should be restarted or if a device in operation should be moved to another network.

To factory reset the DD500E, perform the following steps:

Start a Command prompt window.
Press the Multi-function button on the front panel of the DD500E to enter Configuration mode. Release the button after ~2 seconds.
Run the command dd500e_config factory-reset COMX COMY in the Command prompt window, where:
- COMX COMY are replaced with the COM ports found in Checking COM ports.
- COMX COMY must be entered with a space.
When factory reset has completed, the device will restart. The Power and status indicator will flash green 5 times and the device will enter Configuration mode, indicated by a solid green Power and status indicator.
A new configuration must be uploaded to make the device operational again, see Uploading configuration.

Power redundancy

DD500E is redundant power capable which can be used to lessen the risk of networking downtime. More than one power source can be connected to the device, for instance using both PoE and external power supplies. Both sides of the device should be powered.

In a situation where power on either side of the DD500E fails, the remaining functional power source will power both sides of the device. Such a situation is intended as a backup and temporary solution and should be addressed as soon as possible, see further information in Temperature ranges.
